Apple Mac App Store to open virtual doors today

Having decided to once again forego the Las Vegas convention halls and the global hubbub of the Consumer Electronics Show, fruity tech company Apple is to open the virtual doors of the Mac App Store later today.

Following on from the phenomenal success of its mobile-centric iOS App Store, Apple will launch its desktop and laptop aimed application offerings within the next few hours with many industry analysts predicting a 9am PST rollout, 5pm here in the UK.

Speaking back in December on the upcoming Mac App Store arrival, Apple’s formidable leader Steve Jobs said: “The App Store revolutionised mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on 6 January.”

In keeping with the company’s tried and tested methods, , the Mac App Store will allow users to "browse new and noteworthy apps, find out what’s hot, view staff favourites, search categories and read customer ratings and reviews.”

To be made available as a free download for Mac OS X Snow Leopard users the official Mac App Store announcement last month revealed that ‘Lite’ or free apps will not appear on the PC-based store declaring to developers: "Your website is the best place to provide demos, trial versions, or betas of your software for customers to explore. The apps you submit to be reviewed for the Mac App Store should be fully functional, retail versions of your apps."
