Best Tablets of 2011: The Group Test

With the exception of the adequate but flawed Samsung Galaxy Tab, the iPad has been the only tablet worth considering since its launch 12 months ago… Until now.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer
£379 (16GB) £429 (32GB)
Love: Great screen. Well designed add-on keyboard (£50). Good battery life. Reasonable price. Honeycomb OS
Hate: No HSDPA connectivity. Crappy video. Doesn’t charge via USB. Lacks tablet-specific apps
We Say: An excellent Android tablet made even better with a usefulness-increasing keyboard dock

LG Optimus Pad
£750
Love: Decent screen. Very portable screen size, without sacrificing usability. Good camera. Honeycomb OS
Hate: Chunky. 3D is a tad gimmicky. Expensive. Lack of Honeycomb apps
We Say: The LG Optimus Pad is quick, with a decent screen. The very good 3D camera is just an added bonus.

Motorola Xoom
£479 (WiFi) £579 (WiFi +3G)
Love: Outstanding build quality. Fast. Decent camera. Honeycomb OS
Hate: Washed-out, soft screen. Lack of Honeycomb apps. Storage options limited to 32GB
We Say: The first Honeycomb tablet scored highly at first, but has been outclassed by the Asus EeePad Transformer

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook
£489 (16GB) £575 (32GB)
Love: Great build. Flash-enabled browser. HDMI out. Decent battery life. Typically strong business-related features
Hate: Unimpressive screen. Few apps. Not as fast as rivals
We Say: A solid first effort from RIM, but we’re not sure there’s enough here to coax you away from Android or Apple…

Apple iPad 2
£479 (32GB WiFi) £499 (32GB WiFi+3G)
Love: Fantastic screen. Huge range of apps. Rock solid yet stylish build. Reasonable price for a premium product
Hate: Poor rear camera. You’re tied to iTunes. No HDMI. No Flash
We Say: The best designed tablet you can get, with the most apps. iPad 2 remains the tablet to beat
