Apple working on carbon fibre MacBooks?

Apple has hired a new engineer with a background in carbon fibre, setting off rampant rumours that the Cupertino company is all set to release a string of new kit using the composite material.

Kevin Kenney has taken the role of Senior Composites Engineer at Apple. He’s already been involved with Jobs and co, his name appearing on a 2009 patent for what appears to be a carbon fibre iPad. He has also built carbon fibre bikes in the past.

Rumours of a carbon fibre Mac have gathered pace before, with the current MacBook Air the subject of such speculation. While the Air remains a mainly aluminium device, it doesn’t seem to much of a stretch that Kenney will be focusing on rejigging the current metal frames of the MacBook Pro range, as well as looking to lighten the load of the iPhone and iPad.
